At ocean-i™ we live our motto – designer outdoor urban furniture with ocean-i™(mpact)! – through the materials we use in the manufacture of our products. Using innovative materials technology, we maximize the use of waste materials in our products, which minimizes their environmental footprint, whilst still ensuring their durability, low maintenance and high quality.
RESIN8™ is a concrete modifier developed in Costa Rica and manufactured by CRDC in Cape Town. All types of mixed and dirty remediated plastic waste (Resins 1 to 7) are processed into ASTM*-certified RESIN8™. RESIN8™ completely simulates concrete aggregate and can be used to replace conventional aggregate by up to 5% in structural and 25% in non-structural applications.
During 2020, CRDC successfully incorporated a percentage of cigarette butts into RESIN8™ for ocean-i™. ocean-i™ tested and verified this recycled plastic and cigarette butt ‘sand’ as suitable for our use as raw material in the manufacture of our concrete benches and cigarette butt bins.
RESIN8™ is utilized in appropriate proportions in the manufacture of all of ocean-i™’s concrete products thereby reducing their environmental footprint by reducing the quantity of virgin sand which is mined. The utilization of typically non-recyclable waste in the manufacture of RESIN8™ further reduces the amount of waste that would typically find its way into landfills and / or the oceans.

High strength fibre reinforced concrete (HSFRC) is used in the manufacture of ocean-i™’s concrete SIT bench. HSFRC allows for reduced element sizes as compared to conventional concrete, i.e. a smaller element can carry the same load than would a larger element of lower strength and eliminates the need for steel reinforcing. The advantages are both functional and aesthetic.
Reduced element sizes imply reduced raw material usage with less overall cement leading to reductions in embodied CO2 as well as reductions in emissions related to transportation of a smaller volume of materials. These aspects combined improves the environmental sustainability of the concrete product. In addition, a reduction in element size further infers a reduction in space and size taken up by the concrete element, with the related aesthetic and practical benefits.
We use the highest quality pigments in our concrete cigarette butt bins to ensure the colour does not fade over time. The use of colour further gives them a fresh, updated, modern look.
